What is your background
Whip's posting of Jewish food made me think of what food that my family makes and serves that is specific to my ethnic background. Thats when I realized that we dont do a lot of that. So it got me thinking what is everybodys ethnic background (I love knowing where people come from...Im wierd)
Here is mine-
My dad's mother was born and raised in Maui. She is 100% Portuguese. My Portuguese family comes from Madeira Island and traveled to Hawaii by boat. So all around they are an island family.
My dad's father (who I never met because he died when I was young) is 100% English. Im actually suppose to have their last name but my dad's stepdad adopted him and his siblings
On my mom's side we are not 100% sure of everything but we know that it is a mix of Native American (Choctaw and Cherokee), German, English, French and possibly Irish. We are also Black Dutch but that is a difficult term to define because nobody know s exactly what it is. I have done research and found that Black Dutch was German settlers that got with Native Americans
so thats my background

Post a CommentPanamanian-German on my dad's side. My dad's grandparents met while his grandfather (from Wisconsin) was working on the Panama Canal.
English-Scotch-Irish on my mama's side. Her dad's grandfather came over from Ireland in the late 1800's and my grams family has been here forever but has scotch-english background.
Cool JessNess, Portugese food's a lot like Latin food! I use to go to this Portugese restaurant in college, sooooo yummy! My mom's Irish, Dutch English and Scottish.
My dad is pure Cuban. We should do an international food recipe day in Kitchen Goodness, representing
our heritage!
Indian and Italiano.
ooooo I have dibs on malasadas!!!
I'm boring! We've been here for a LONG time, but Scottish, Irish and English mixes on both sides. Very typical heritage for East Tennessee, and the south in general. One great grandmother came over from England in 1905 or so, that is our most recent
Um my grammy is french and my grandaddy was irish and creek indian (his grandaddy was the son of a very promiscuious creek cheifs daughter that was sent to his dad to live bc well no half breed in the tribe shiz or whatever) and then on the other side I dont know about but I hear theres cherokee indian
I'm not sure who's from where exactly, but most of my ancestors on both sides are mostly Russian and Polish, with a little German mixed in.
The most recent was my father's grandmother, who came over from Russia and had two daughters in the US. She could barely speak English, so she mostly spoke Yiddish until the day she died, which was just a few months before I was born.
1/2 Irish 1/2 Scottish on Daddy's side
1/4 Cherokee
and more Irish....
That be all I know!
I went to rock and roll heaven, and I wasn't on the guest list.

I have a mixture of German and Danish, with a little bit of Cherokee added in...but I believe mostly German and Danish.
Man, ya'll know a lot more about your heritage than me!!! I need to have a sit down with the grams! I know we are german from my mother's mother's mother's mother. And Indian from my father's father's father. And my father's mother's family is scandenavian (sp?)....I must research this and come back!
Yes, you must!
dad's side 50% lithuianian 50% irish
mom all irish
Haha, Atox! It's always good to know as much as possible about your heritage. Any more Danish peeps on here?
nice- I wish I was yoda
Mostly English, Welsh, Scottish, with a dash of Cherokee on both sides.
Wow, where do I begin!??!?!
Mum is Maltese-English, British Citizen (Malta was a British colony until 1964)
Dad is a Canadian of the Scottish and Welsh distribution.
My parents now reside in the USA.
My husband is English-German with some Jewish in the background but all that info disappears around the time of WWII (not surprising).
Culturally I was raised with a lot of Canadian social morals, a healthy dose of mediterranean guilt and and endless supply of old wives-tales, also with mulitple languages. I moved to the UK when I was a teenager (I'm a British citizen through mum). Now I live in France and work, speak and socialize in French with my English husband.
Confusing? HAHAHAHA!
the only one i am certain of is dutch only because i did genealogy research and found out my maternal grandmother's family immigrated and owned what is now riker's island in new york.
other than that i can only speculate and figure i have probably english and possibly scandinavian as well only because of my family's surnames and our coloring.
my paternal grandmother always claimed she had indian background, but doesn't someone in every family claim that? i have yet to have any proof on that one. guess it is possible.
It's very difficult to prove Native American heritage because not everyone was included on the Indian rolls.
i would imagine twink. now johnny depp says his mother's side has native american. i can totally believe that.
Yes he looks it. There is supposedly one Cherokee on either side of my family: a great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother. If you saw some of my relatives, you'd believe it. I of course got the pale face and light hair and eyes from the rest of the tree
My Mum's mum is half Scottish and Half Syrian, her dad is Jamaican with Spanish backgrounds. My dad's parents I don't too much about except that they're from Dominica and have Spanish roots.
Im 100% grade A Spic
hahahaha
100% Dominican which means we have some Spaniard, Tahino indian and African mixed in. I am more mulato colored which means more Indian and Spanish, than black.
Three parts Italian, one part German.
Good blog idea Jess!
Both of my parents were born in boring ol Michigan (along with me..
) but we have
Polish/Italian background. My great grandparents on my dad's side came to the States from Poland (I swear it's the sweetest
story eva!) and on my mom's side.. her mother came to the States from Italy in her teens, and her dad
was born here
As for food we get a lot of the good Polish and Italian so it's all good
100 percent Puerto Rican. As for my family, both my parent's families come from Spain but am certain there is a bit of Taino (American Indians in Puerto Rico) and/or African American in my dad's side.
My mom's side is Japanese, but I'm yonsei which means 4th generation American...I think? Of course, they all lived in Hawaii which wasn't actually a state until well after my mom was born, so I guess it just means 4th generation NOT in Japan...?
My dad's side is German and English, I think. I KNOW German, what else, I dunno...
Oooo I thought you meant you know German as in you speak it for a sec Jen.. I was all DUDE I didn't know you speak German!
Hahahaha I know chus (sp? Choos? whateva..) because my German friend says it like 1932872193871398712 times whenever she's speaking to her friends/fam in German.. it's stuck in my head for life
What does it mean?
Tschuss
Hello and goodbye apparently because she says it whenever greeting or saying adios to anyone hahaha
I actually took German in HS I should know a lot more than I do
It means goodbye. Never heard it used at hello. We could ask TOHO or Ollie
Ah! Thanks, guys. I'm sure I'll forget that immediately.
Yeah she throws tschuss out there a mile a minute hahahaha
EVOO is German?
I'm Swiss/German from my Father's side of the family. His last name, (my maiden name) is the name of the town in Switzerland, that his side of the family comes from (it's no longer on the map). And, I'm also Irish, and English from my Mom's side of the family.
I know the Native American for sure in my family because 1) my gradnmother was born on a reservation (although when you saw her she clearly wasnt 100%) 2) if you ever saw my grandfather he could literally blend in with Indians
Jen- I love that both of our families are from Hawaii but different backgrounds
as predicted karma was a horrible student
